REACH treats a battery as an article. Under Article 33 the supplier of an article that contains a Candidate List substance above 0.1 % weight by weight must give the recipient enough information for safe use, and at least the name of the substance. This document is that communication for every ATB lead-acid battery.
Lead — EC No 231-100-4, CAS No 7439-92-1 — on the Candidate List since 27 June 2018 (toxic for reproduction, REACH Article 57(c)). Lead and its compounds (lead dioxide, lead sulphate) make up the plates and the active material of every lead-acid battery and account for the greater part of the battery mass (typically above 60 % w/w). Lead is the electrode material that makes a lead-acid battery work; the chemistry has no substitute for it.
| Article | Substance | EC / CAS | Concentration range (w/w) | Location in the article |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ATB VRLA battery, all AGM and GEL ranges | Lead | 231-100-4 / 7439-92-1 | ≥ 20 % (SCIP range; typically above 60 %) | Positive and negative plates, grids, active material and terminal posts, inside the sealed case |
The non-active materials of the batteries (case and cover, terminal metal, sealing compound, separator and valve materials) were screened on representative models of the AGM and GEL ranges against the ECHA Candidate List as updated on 4 February 2026 (253 entries, the latest update published at the date of this declaration). Lead was the only Candidate List substance found above 0.1 % w/w in the materials screened (technical file reference TF-VRLA-08). Sulphuric acid (electrolyte, CAS 7664-93-9) is not on the Candidate List. ATB Power checks each Candidate List update published by ECHA and re-issues this declaration if a newly listed substance turns out to be present above the threshold.
The obligation to notify articles containing Candidate List substances to the ECHA SCIP database rests on suppliers of articles established in the Union (importers and distributors). The data in Section 2 — article name and model designations, substance name, EC/CAS numbers, concentration range, material category and safe-use instructions — is provided to support that notification. A model-level SCIP data set is available on request.
This declaration is issued by ATB Power Limited as the manufacturer of the products it covers, from the records in its technical file: type tests and material screening on representative models, the production site’s material declarations, the label specifications and ATB Power’s own evaluations. The lead content is taken from the product design and the safety data sheet; the screening for other substances covers representative models of the ranges. No laboratory or certification body has assessed the document itself, and it does not stand in for the reports behind it. It describes the products as built at the date printed above; ATB Power re-issues it when a design, a material, a production site, a legal requirement or a piece of evidence changes, and the version reachable through the QR code on the battery is the current one. Market surveillance authorities receive the underlying technical documentation on reasoned request (Article 38(10) of Regulation (EU) 2023/1542); customers who need extracts for their own compliance records can obtain them under a confidentiality agreement by writing to info@atbpower.com.
